- Lizard Bite came up with the basic premise that became The Eye while writing a poem in the eighth grade. The original concept was used for a poem about a town plagued by a monster called the Retributionist that killed anyone who broke its strict moral code. It was a large, fleshy creature with bat-wings, a long tail with a blade on the end, four feet that extended into scythe-like claws, and a single giant eye that rested above its mouth filled with multiple rows of razor-sharp teeth. What made it especially dangerous to its unsuspecting prey was the fact that it was completely invisible. The only way people could see what it looked like was to watch a criminal being punished; the blood splatter across the Retributionist’s body as it cut them in half would reveal the creature’s outline. A traveler would eventually arrive and set a trap for the Retributionist by staging a fight while a wizard prepared a spell to strip its invisibility away, thus allowing them to finally kill it.
- The second prototype of the Eye was a fantasy hero called Cer, the Retribitionist. with the unique power to transfer the pain from one person to another. He would use this ability to punish the wicked wherever he went by subjecting them to the pain innocent people experienced and was something of a folk hero.
- The decision to make the Eye target people who feel guilt for their actions was inspired by the Silent Hill 2 antagonist Pyramid Head, a hulking brute of a man who carries a huge knife and wears a metal, triangular helmet. In his original appearance, Pyramid Head was a monster born from James Sunderland's sub-conscious belief that what he had done was unforgivable, and that he needed to be punished for his sins.
