The Queen of Maggots is a portrayal of The Fear of Control, specifically societal and systematic abuse and oppression. It is a consciousness which exists within a swarm of insects who can infest and possess human bodies known as Queens and Drones. Queens are young or teenage girls whose bodies have been completely taken over by the Queen, and act as its avatars and mouthpieces. There is no trace of their original personality in the bodies; for all intents and purposes, they are the manifestation of the Queen of Maggots. Since the Queens are just empty bodies filled with insects, they tend to have corpse-like appearances (pale skin, sunken eyes, etc.). Drones on the other hand, cover a wide range, from willing servants to victims who have had control of their bodies taken from them. The victims are generally controlled either through spiderwebs or parasitic infestation.
