The Fear Mythos Wiki

The things with dead eyes that used to be men, are a group of entities introduced in The Jeanette Experience. As their name suggests, they were once human before being transformed into mindless slaves. The identity of the Fear responsible for creating these creatures is still a mystery, though it has been hinted that it might be the one the Knight of Coins is currently tuned to.

Characteristics[]

Jeanette Cotton compared the thing with dead eyes she encountered to zombies from Haitian folklore, stating it was "living and mindless and focused on the task in front of [it]". She also described it as grey and washed out, as if the thing was absorbing all of the color around it. This ability appeared to affect the objects it touched as well.

The things with dead eyes normally go to a location and stand there for days on end if need be. Once they are given orders, the things will capture their latest target, drag them out of sight, and vanish from the crime scene. Occasionally, the people who get kidnapped will be transformed into things themselves. Alternatively, a group of things could form small hit squads and go after certain people with the intent to kill. Nothing short of killing a thing will stop it from accomplishing its mission; Jeanette saw this firsthand when she smashed a thing's head in with a brick, only for it to get back up and continue moving until it finally bled to death. She suggested that the best way to slay a thing was to stab it in the heart so the flow of blood could stop altogether.

Weaknesses[]

The things don't have a very long shelf life. Some last until they die of thirst, which happens a bit faster for them compared to a normal human. Others suffer spontaneous organ failure minutes to days after being active. They also can't process actions outside of the task they're been given or form complex plans by themselves. If they are not specifically sent out to fight, the thing with dead eyes will not harm their target, even if they're attacked.
